Asia Snapshot - Raising New Zealand’s engagement with Asia

Overview
New Zealand has long recognised Asia’s importance to our security and prosperity. Asia is fast changing and New Zealand is focused on enhancing our relationships within the region and raising the tempo of our engagement to ensure we stay ahead of the game.
Changes in the Asian region affect political and security groupings. ASEAN is becoming more influential and new structures, such as the East Asian Summit, are emerging. China has evolved as one of the world’s fastest growing economies. The New Zealand-India economic relationship is poised for future growth. The Japanese economy may be picking up steam again, and Korea continues its fast pace of growth.
If New Zealand wants to be better integrated and linked to the growth and dynamism of Asia, we need to strengthen our ties with the region. We will need to demonstrate that we are a good neighbour, by developing long term relationships and partnerships in development cooperation, security, human rights and sustainability. New Zealand also needs to find new ways to link into and make the most of economic growth with Asia. It will also be important for New Zealand to boost our awareness of Asia and become more ‘Asia literate’.
Asia snapshots seminar
Raising the tempo of New Zealand’s engagement with Asia is a long term commitment. In May 2008 representatives from New Zealand currently posted in the Asia region gathered in Wellington and Auckland to discuss New Zealand’s relationships and engagement with Asia. This includes three days of strategy planning and networking with key foreign policy stakeholders and an Asia Snapshot seminar, hosted jointly with the The ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and The Auckland Chamber of Commerce.
The seminar provided an opportunity for participants to hear from veteran diplomats with on the ground experience in Asia, along with experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the business community. The representatives' details and a summary of their insights into their areas of responsibility can be seen below.
